Queer People of Color Hamburg

QPOCHH

Queer People of Color Hamburg is an international group open to queer, trans*, Black and intersex PoCs. Dedicated to building a community for those seeking shared experiences and connections, QPOCHH creates a space for marginalised voices to bring about change inside and outside the QPoC community. This safe space isn’t only for emotional recharge; it is also a place to educate and learn, laugh and simply be. Meetings are held weekly to discuss community topics and plan cultural, social, and educational events.

For the first collaboration with the HIQFF, QPOCHH has designed four programms that celebrate the work of filmmakers of color. Three of the programmesare presented beneath.

QUEER MUSLIM S.E. ASIAN SHORTS

Saturday, 19.10.19, 5.30 p.m., Metropolis

PANEL: “QUEER VISIBILITY AND BACKLASH  IN S.E. ASIAN FILM”

LUPAH SUG (LAND OF THE BRAVE)
Rhadem Camlian Morados, Phillipines 2018, 30’, Filipino with English subtitles

LANGIT BUDAK BIRU (BLUE SKY BOY)
Kean Hian Lim, Malaysia 2018, 24’, Malaysian with English subtitles

KADO (A GIFT)
Aditya Ahmad, Indonesia 2018, 15’, Indonesian and Makassarese with English subtitles

This shorts programme explores queer Muslim identities across the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. On one hand, as in the documentary “Lupah Sug”, there are strong coming-out narratives of those demanding to be seen. On the other hand, as in “Kado” and “Langit Budak Biru”, queerness is understated and must to be searched for to be noticed. Filmmaking has always been a medium for visibility in a literal sense. This desire to claim screen space mirrors the impetus for claiming public space. Yet this claim can be perceived as a ‘threat’ or ‘invasion’ by those who police the borders of contemporary national and religious belonging. Each film presented here has been the subject of controversial treatment to varying degrees. How do queer Southeast-Asian Muslims negotiate these two needs for visibility and also safety? How do filmmakers take responsibility for the risks to their subjects or their crews in making queer films? A panel discussion on queer visibility will involve Rhadem Camlian Morados, director of “Lupah Sug”, Neoh Ruo Ning, producer of “Langit Budak Biru” and Ferdiansyah Thajib, Ph.D. candidate at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Freie Universität Berlin. The panel will be moderated by anthropol-ogist and film scholar, Rosalia Namsai Engchuan.

ANOTHER DREAM

Tamara Shogaolu, Netherlands/Egypt/USA/Norway 2019, 20’, Animated VR Documentary, English & Arabic with English Subtitles

How do you rebuild a life when you know you can never go home?
“Another Dream”, a hybrid animated documentary and virtual reality (VR) game, brings the gripping, true love story of an Egyptian lesbian couple to life. Faced with a post-revolution backlash against the LGBTIQ* community, they escape Cairo to seek asylum and acceptance in the Netherlands. An accompanying installation allows audiences to reflect on what they have seen, heard, and felt in VR.

“Another Dream” is part of Queer in a Time of Forced Migration, an animated transmedia series that follows the stories of LGBTIQ* refugees from Egypt, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia across continents and cultures — from the 2011 revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa region to the world today.

Viewers are invited to experience the exhibition in pairs. Each person will use their own VR headset at the same time as their partner.

Viewing slots are available every thirty minutes and must be reserved ahead of time at Metropolis Kino. On sale from Monday, 14th October, 5 p.m.

Cost: 8 euro (includes entrance for 2 people)
